Botox and Juvederm

It was 2002 when the FDA approved Botox to iron out wrinkles in the human skin, and 2010 when Juvéderm got the FDA nod. While both of these treatments are used for aesthetics, they also provide various other medical benefits. At Benefield Eye Care Center, we have years of experience sharing the benefits of Botox and Juvéderm with Gulfport residents.

If you are considering having any work done with Botox or Juvéderm, you will first need to be assessed by an eye care specialist. Our ophthalmologist will evaluate your condition to determine whether or not Botox or Juvéderm is right for you.

How Does Juvéderm Work?

Juvéderm contains hyaluronic acid, which is naturally produced by the body. It is this acid that keeps our skin feeling smooth and soft when we are young. As we age, our body begins to produce less hyaluronic acid. This is why we see more lines, rows of wrinkles, crowsfeet, and crinkly foreheads as we age.

Juvéderm is administered by injection, with multiple injections at a time performed in the ophthalmology office. This filler will stimulate the skin and encourage it to make more collagen so that your skin stays nice and elastic. After the injection, our ophthalmologist will rub the skin softly to ensure the filler is evenly distributed beneath your skin. Juvéderm can treat any area of your skin, and its effects can last for up to six months.

How Does Botox Work?

Botox works in a very similar manner to Juvederm, with injections that smooth out the rows of fine lines on your forehead, crowsfeet, eyes, cheeks, and lips. However, it functions differently on a chemical level. Botox is short for botulinum toxin type A, and this chemical weakens your muscles to prevent the development of wrinkles.

Botox is often used for aesthetics, but it also has several medical advantages. Because it weakens muscles, it also can weaken nerves that are causing headaches or other facial or back or neck pain. It is so effective for so many things that it is now used in over 95 countries. Botox is administered like Juvederm in the sense that it is administered as injections to the face to reduce edges around the eyes. The results usually last for between three and four months.
